Buying a Ceiling Fan

Here we've addressed all the big questions you may have about selecting and buying ceiling fans, Regency or otherwise. Take a tour and see if we can help you understand ceiling fans better.

Style and Finish

Ceiling fans are available in an enormous selection of styles and finishes. For those wishing to design a fan which represents a very specific style, Regency offers innovative Décor Match™ design options. These fans offer interchangeable motors, blades, light kits and controls for total ceiling fan customization.

Predesigned ceiling fans typically include ceiling fans, blades, and possibly even remote controls. Regency’s designer fans include styles inspired by the latest trends in interior influences. This comprehensive collection of designer series ceiling fans range from classic to progressively modern designs.

Quality Motors

The motor is the heart of the fan and is responsible for supplying the power to drive the fan’s blades for maximum performance. The Regency motors are carefully selected to provide optimum air movement and be the most efficient for the fan’s blade size and the room’s environment. Motor sizes are identified by the diameter and the height of the motor and measure 153 x 10 millimeters up to 212 x 25mm.

One of the newest motor types is the direct current (DC) motor, which is a fairly simple electric motor that uses electricity and a magnetic field to produce torque, which turns the motor. Regency’s Gladiator fan (GL3) with DC motor is up to 70% more energy efficient compared to ceiling fans with traditional motors. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized The GL3 fan as ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient 2013 and 2014.

Quality Blades
Quality blades are laminated wood construction (like plywood) and are covered with sealing stains or poly coatings to keep out moisture and resist warping. Regency uses the best real wood veneer. Blades are packaged into matched sets and are computer balanced to within one gram of each other. Regency’s blade arms, made of high grade die cast zinc or steel, are measured to the exact same pitch and balance and have large mounting screws with lock washers to ensure exact alignment.

Mood Glow™ Uplighting

Many of Regency’s ceiling fans feature Mood Glow™ uplighting, which provides a subtle, indirect light source above the ceiling fan. The reflected light from the ceiling may also be combined with various lighting and control options, allowing the ability to set a distinctive mood in any room.

Regency’s Mood Glow™ uplighting fans offer the most versatile and complete offering of uplighting in the industry and the uplighting and the lower lighting may be controlled independently.

Down Lighting

Ceiling fans also provide an excellent light source for those areas with insufficient room lighting. For ultimate versatility, downlights may be used for activities requiring more light, and the Mood Glow™ uplighting may be enjoyed during those times when bright lights are distracting.

Regency’s light kits are offered in a wide array of finishes and designs and are compatible with all Décor Match™ ceiling fans.

U.L. Wet Location Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fans

All U.L. fans are tested against a series of quality standards to ensure the electrical, mechanical safety and longevity of the fans. Wet location Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) approved fans are perfect for enjoying the outdoors, no matter how hot and damp the weather.

Regency has one of the largest selections of outdoor fans in the industry, encompassing styles from contemporary to traditional, and are offered in a variety of finishes to complement all décor. Many of these outdoor fans allow for light kit additions, blade customization and even remote control operation.

Remote Control Options
Remote control options for ceiling fans not only add convenience, for those ceiling fans on very high ceilings, the controls are a necessity. Remotes control the ceiling fan’s speed, direction and both uplighting and down lighting. Regency’s Select TouchTM fan and light wall controls (available as wall or handheld units) allow for full function (3-speeds and reverse) fan control and uplight and downlight operation, including independent dimming.

Energy Efficiency

Regency’s ceiling fans are engineered to move more cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) while using significantly less energy work as efficiently as possible, so each component is designed to contribute to savings in energy costs. Regency ceiling fans move more cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) while using significantly less energy. Even at the highest setting, each ceiling fan uses about the same amount of power as a 100-watt light bulb.

Regency’s large selection of ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fans offer maximum energy efficiency, and when combined with a Regency energy saving light kit, offer up to 30% total energy savings.

Quality motors will usually have electrical ratings of 1.5 amps or less and can deliver all of the power needed, because quality materials like high grade copper wire, precision bearings and dynamically balanced aluminum rotors are used. Lesser motors may have electrical ratings of up to 3 amps or more but they are only using more electricity to do the same job. All of Regency’s fans have electrical ratings of 1.5 amps or less.

Maximum Performance

The duty of any well-designed fan is to move the most air possible. The pitch of the blades (in degrees from horizontal) determines how much air is blown as the blades move through the air. More pitch means more air is moved, but it’s not quite that simple. Greater pitch requires a stronger motor to maximize air movement. For example, Regency’s highest blade pitch model is the 20 degree pitch Tropic Air.

Regency’s blade arms, made of high grade die cast zinc or steel, are measured to the exact same pitch and balance and have large mounting screws with lock washers to ensure exact alignment.

Quiet Operation
Many quality features contribute to the silent operation of a fan. Here are the most important:
  • Bearings
  • Regency uses only double-sealed and lubricated-for-life high grade steel bearings. The lubricant stays in and the dust and dirt stays out for quiet, lifelong operation.

  • Speed Control
  • Capacitors control the speed of the fan and Regency uses a separate one for each speed – three in every three-speed fan. Single capacitor fans can be three-speed, but cost less to build and will most certainly hum throughout the fan’s lifetime.

  • Vibration Isolators
  • A quality fan’s small motor vibrations will be damped out by the generous use of gaskets and washers throughout. Regency uses the highest quality rubber hang bracket isolators, motor gaskets and blade screw washers for quiet operation.

Summer Versus Winter

Ceiling Slope

Supplied mounting brackets allow mounting on ceiling slopes up to 28°(6/12 pitch), some up to 39°(8/12 pitch). Regency's optional slope kit shown in our accessories section allows mounting on ceilings up to 48°(greater than 12/12 pitch). When using canopy installed remote controls, maximum slope is restricted to 15°(3/12 pitch). Sloped ceiling kit is not adaptable to canopy installed remote control use. The chart above explains the relationship between degrees and pitch.

Room Size

Ceiling Height

Be sure there is at least 7 foot of clearance under your ceiling fan blades. The standard 4"-6" downrod should work in most 8 ft. ceiling installations. This will position the blades far enough from the ceiling to have enough "supply" air above the blades to provide good air movement. If greater floor to fan clearance is needed, most fans can be mounted "close-up" without using any downrod. However, air movement is reduced using the close-up mounting. The chart above shows recommended downrod lengths for various ceiling heights.

Simple Installation
Proper installation is essential to guarantee a quiet, smooth running ceiling fan. Regency has built features into the design of all fans to make the installation very simple and ensure that every component fits tightly together, stays in alignment and operates silently and wobble free.
